Renee Chipman (nee Haweis) was born in London, England in 1903 to parents Lionel Haweis and Lucy Sara DeVengette. She came to Canada with her parents at the age of three, first to New Westminster and later moving to Vancouver. Following various volunteer activities associated with the World War II effort, Renee Haweis joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC). By November 1941 she had become a commissioned officer. Stephen Haweis (1878-1969), youngest son of the Reverend Hugh Reginald and Mary Eliza Haweis, a socially prominent couple in late Victorian London who entertained at their house in Cheyne Walk (previously owned by Dante Gabrielle Rossetti). Stephen studied art in Paris with Alphonse Mucha and Eugene Carriè€re. After becoming interested in photography, Stephen met Rodin and subsequently photographed many of the sculptor's pieces. His wife, Mary Elizabeth Joy Haweis, was an author of women's and children's books whose book on Chaucer became a standard text for English schools.
